What Is A Good Mini Vacation Idea? I Live In Metro Detroit.?
I would like to surprise my husband with a mini vacation somewhere. I was planning on Boston since the Tigers will be playing the Red Sox, however it is adding up to be too much money. Any ideas on places to drive to (within 4-5 hours). We have done the whole west side of Michigan a bunch of times. Also possibly something in OH or IN? Thanks!

To Skittles are M & M wannabees: The Rifle River is way better than Au Sable. ;-)
You mentioned you’ve done the west side many times, does that include the Traverse City area? Even for adults climbing the Sleeping Bear Dunes is a great adventure, and the view of Lake Michigan from the other side is marvelous.
There is plenty to do in the Mackinac area, and if you’re there you can jump on the bridge and visit the Upper Peninsula. Without venturing too far in you can see a lot of the mining industry culture.
if you were thinking of a big city try toronto. it’s beautiful and clean. different areas of the city are like different countries. china town, little italy, etc. public transportation is cheap and safe, and the people who live there are amazing. it’s definately the most cosmopolitan city within a short drive of detroit. i always take the train though, it’s fun and cheaper than gas. there are a million things to do there regardless of your interests and it’s not very touristy. have fun!
You could take a trip to Alpena. Please report back if you find anything interesting there.
Or, if you want to go into Ohio, there’s the Pro Football Hall Of Fame in Canton, or the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton. And if you’re going that way, along I-75 at Lake Wapakoneta you’ll notice the Neil Armstrong Museum,, a timely place to visit in this 40th anniversary year of the first moon landing.
My family moved to CA about 2 years ago but one of my best memories is when we put all four direcitons in a bag. N, S, E, and W and choose one. Then we saw what was in that direction.
We ended up in Cleveland at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It was a lot of fun. We also went to Amish Country in Ohio for a bit. Very cute and cozy.
I like my new home in CA but I have to say that there are so many things we were going to do “one of these days” that we never got to. Like the walk across Mac. Bridge on (Memorial Day or Labor Day? ) Like going back to Strafford in CA for more Shakespear. Toronto too.
I have to go but wherever you end up have a blast.
